Your skin keeps a pretty honest record of where you have been. Breakouts from a few years back, marks from a new shaving routine, texture that showed up when everything else in your life was changing too. For a lot of transgender and nonbinary people, those changes pile up during a transition, and the question becomes less "what is microneedling?" and more "is microneedling actually for someone like me, and will I feel comfortable getting it?"

The short answer is yes. Microneedling is a collagen-building treatment for scarring and texture, and it works on skin, not on identity. What makes it a good fit is a plan built around your skin tone, your history and where your skin is right now. Here is how that looks for clients who visit our Old Fourth Ward studio from across Atlanta, Georgia.

What Skin Changes Do Trans and Nonbinary Clients Notice Most?

Every transition is different, and nobody's skin follows a script. Still, a few concerns come up again and again in consultations.

Why might breakouts and acne scars show up during a transition?

Many people notice their skin behaving differently while their body is changing. Some find their skin gets oilier and breaks out more, others notice it feels drier or finer than before. We are not the right people to explain your hormone plan, and your prescribing clinician is the best person for those questions. What we can do is work with what shows up on the surface: leftover acne scars, uneven texture and pores that look larger than they used to. If breakouts are still active, our page on acne and acne scars explains how we handle the breakouts first and the scarring second.

Can shaving, razor bumps and ingrown hairs leave lasting marks?

They can, especially on melanin-rich skin. Shaving more often, shaving new areas or dealing with new facial hair growth can lead to razor bumps and ingrown hairs. Each flare of irritation can leave behind a dark mark or a small pitted scar along the jaw, neck or chin. Over months, that adds up to uneven texture that makeup or a beard does not fully hide.

What Does Microneedling Actually Do for Scarring and Texture?

Microneedling uses a pen-style device with very fine, sterile needles to create tiny controlled channels in the skin. Your skin responds the way it responds to any small injury: it repairs itself, producing fresh collagen and elastin as it heals. Over a series of sessions, that new collagen helps soften acne scars, smooth rough patches and refine the look of pores.

At Skin So Bare, microneedling is performed with the Rejuvapen device, which you can read about on our technology page. Needle depth is adjusted to the area and the concern, so the jawline, cheeks and forehead are not all treated the same way.

Concerns microneedling is commonly used for include:

  • Acne scars and older scars
  • Rough or uneven texture
  • Enlarged-looking pores
  • Dullness and fine lines
  • Stretch marks, which can appear when your body shape changes, whether from muscle gain, weight changes or other shifts (our guide to stretch mark treatment in Atlanta goes deeper)

Is Microneedling Safe for Trans Clients and for Melanin-Rich Skin?

Safety depends on your skin, not your gender. A few details matter more than anything else.

Does hormone therapy change whether you can get microneedling?

Being on hormone therapy does not, by itself, rule anyone out. What matters is the condition of your skin on treatment day. Active breakouts, irritation, infection, a fresh sunburn or skin that is still healing all mean microneedling should wait. Some prescription acne medications also require a waiting period. Share your full medication list, hormones included, at your consultation so your plan fits your timing, and check with your prescribing clinician if you are unsure about anything.

What about deeper skin tones and dark marks?

Deeper skin tones are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark marks that can follow any irritation. With microneedling, that risk is managed through conservative depth, careful technique and strict aftercare, including daily sunscreen under Atlanta's strong sun. Our article on whether microneedling is safe for dark skin covers this in more detail.

If your main concern is the dark marks themselves rather than texture, microneedling usually is not the lead treatment. Aerolase NeoElite treatments and VI Peels are better suited to fading discoloration and restoring an even tone.

Can microneedling be used on older surgical scars?

Old scars are among the concerns microneedling is used for. Any scar from surgery, though, needs to be fully healed and cleared by your surgeon before anyone treats it. Bring that clearance and your timeline to your consultation so the plan starts at the right moment.

Which Other Treatments Pair Well With Microneedling During a Transition?

Microneedling smooths what is already there. Stopping new damage is just as important, and that is where other services come in.

  • Laser hair removal for beard reduction or shaping, Brazilian, Manzilian and other areas. Less shaving usually means fewer razor bumps and fewer new marks. Our post on laser hair removal for transgender clients explains how that works.
  • Laser facials for breakouts, including hormonal breakouts, with no downtime.
  • Aerolase treatments, which are also used for razor bumps and the redness that comes with them.
  • A customizable facial between sessions to keep skin calm and clear.

You can see how we support clients through every stage on our transgender services page.

How Does Skin So Bare Approach Microneedling for Trans and Nonbinary Clients?

Skin So Bare is run by Stephanie, a licensed esthetician and laser technician who focuses on skin of color and sensitive skin and welcomes clients of all genders and identities. Clients come to our studio on Auburn Avenue from Midtown, Inman Park, Downtown, Decatur and beyond.

Your consultation starts with your name, your pronouns and your goals. From there, we look at your skin tone, scar type, breakout activity and how your skin has healed in the past. Sometimes the honest answer is "not yet." If breakouts are still active, a plan might start with laser facials or the Clarity Reset program from our Signature Skin Programs before any needling happens. That patience protects your skin and your results.

What Should You Expect From a Microneedling Series?

Right after a session, skin usually looks flushed, similar to a mild sunburn, and that redness is short-lived. The real change happens underneath over the following weeks as collagen rebuilds, which is why microneedling is done as a series rather than a single visit. The number of sessions depends on how deep and how old your scarring is.

Aftercare is simple but non-negotiable: gentle cleanser, no harsh actives for a few days, no picking and daily sunscreen. If you shave the treated area, ask how long to wait before picking the razor back up.

New Chapter, Smoother Pages

Transition is a lot of change at once, and your skin does not need to be one more thing you just put up with. Microneedling will not rewrite your skin overnight, but with the right depth, the right timing and a provider who sees you clearly, it can steadily soften the scars and texture you have been carrying around. When you are ready, book a consultation at Skin So Bare Laser Center and we will build a plan around your skin and your story.

Common Questions About Microneedling for Transgender Clients

Can I get microneedling while I am on hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy on its own does not usually rule out microneedling. Your skin's condition on treatment day matters most. Share your medication list at your consultation, and ask your prescribing clinician about anything specific to your plan.

Will microneedling help with razor bump scars on my jaw and neck?

Microneedling is used for older scars and uneven texture, including the small pitted marks razor bumps can leave behind. Pairing it with laser hair removal helps prevent new bumps from forming.

Is microneedling safe for dark skin?

Yes, when it is customized. Conservative depth, careful technique and consistent sunscreen help lower the risk of dark marks after treatment on melanin-rich skin.

How many microneedling sessions will I need?

Most people need a series, and the exact number depends on your scar type, scar depth and how your skin responds. Your plan is set at your consultation and adjusted as your skin improves.

Will I be treated with respect at Skin So Bare?

Absolutely. Clients of every gender and identity are welcome, and your consultation starts with your name, your pronouns and what you want for your skin.
